The Manhattan Christian College men's basketball team picked up two wins this weekend at the Faith Classic in Ankeny, IA. On Friday MCC defeated Iowa Wesleyan College (NCAA III) 62-53. The Crusaders rebounded a 31-30 halftime deficit to come away with the victory. Lonnie Penner paced MCC with 16 points, while David Frost added 9 points and Alex Hammack and Sage Ruis each chipped in with 8 points.
Saturday against Maranatha Baptist Bible College (Watertown, WI - NCAA III/NCCAA II), MCC picked up a 79-78 overtime victory. The Crusaders jumped out to a 25-14 lead, but MCC struggled over the rest of the first half while MBBC went on a 22-8 run to take a 36-33 halftime lead. MCC came out strong to start the second half, scoring the first eleven points to go up 44-36, but MBBC would not go away and the cut the deficit back to 45-42. MCC was able to stretch the lead again out to 57-50, but MBBC responded with a 10-0 run to take a 60-57 with about five minutes left. MBBC would stretch their lead out to 67-61 with just under two minutes to play. A three-pointer by Penner and a traditional three-point play by Jack Mitchell cut the lead to 69-67 with just over a minute to play. Trailing 71-69 with 38 seconds left MCC forced a turnover and Ruis hit Penner for a layup with seven seconds left to force overtime. In the overtime period MCC opened a slight 76-73 with just over a minute to play, but a turnover and layup by MBBC cut the lead to 76-75. Penner hit one of two free throws with 22 seconds left to put MCC up 77-75. MBBC came down the floor and hit a three to go up 78-77 with seven seconds left. MCC pushed the ball up the floor and Ruis drove to the basket and hit a leaner with one second left to give MCC the 79-78 victory. Ruis led MCC with 18 points, Penner had 17 points and Hammack added 16 points for the victors.
MCC is now 3-5 on the season and they will be off until December 3rd when they host Barclay College the City Auditorium.
