MANHATTAN CHRISTIAN COLLEGE

Annual Report:

Manhattan Christian College and the U. S. Department of Education are committed to providing students with a safe environment in which to learn. Colleges are required to keep students and parents well informed about campus security, and to this end, MCC is publishing this annual report to be distributed to all students and employees of MCC, and to prospective students and employees upon request. The full report can be accessed at the federal web site

http://ope.ed.gov.security

In the event of crimes that pose a significant threat to the MCC campus community, timely warning information will be provided to all students and employees to prevent similar crimes from occurring and to protect the personal safety of students and employees.

Biblical standards of conduct are expected of all students and personnel both on and off campus at all times. Residence hall leaders educate their residents on basic common sense practices to use or avoid in the event that individuals could be unexpectedly endangering the campus. Sexual assault prevention programs are also handled by the residence hall supervisors who would be the designated individual to handle the reporting, referral for counseling and any other required procedures should this type of crime ever occur on campus. Common sense practices such as walking in pairs in the dark, keeping to lighted areas and reporting suspicious activity are always timely reminders. In the event of a sexual assault, it is important that the victim do the following: refrain from showering, changing clothing or disturbing the area where the rape occurred (to preserve as much evidence as possible). The victim should seek medical attention from a local health care facility or emergency room. MCC Student Services should be notified, who will in turn assist the victim in notifying the proper local authorities. The victim will be referred to appropriate counseling agencies by the Student Services Office after the incident. If changes in academic or living situations are requested by the victim of a sexual offense, MCC will work with the student to accommodate the change if it is reasonably available. The procedures for campus disciplinary actions in cases of an alleged sex offense involving an MCC student or students will be handled as follows: both the accuser and the accused are entitled to the same opportunities to have others present during disciplinary proceedings, and will be informed of the school’s final determination of any disciplinary proceeding with respect to the alleged sex offense, and any sanction that is imposed against the accused. Sanctions imposed following a final determination of a sex offense (including rape, or other forcible or non-forcible sex offences) result in expulsion from the college.

Incidents involving inappropriate student behavior are to be reported immediately to the MCC Student Services Office and incidents involving campus facilities are to be reported immediately to the director of the physical plant or the Business Affairs Office who will take appropriate action.

Procedures for reporting incidences of student non-criminal misconduct are addressed in the MCC Student Handbook.

Campus crime statistics: The following is a U. S. Department of Education list of crimes which require statistics to be revealed for the past three years: murder, forcible and non-forcible sex offenses, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, manslaughter, arson, arrests or persons referred for campus disciplinary action for liquor law violations and weapons possession and crimes that show evidence of prejudice based on race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity or disability as prescribed by the Hate Crimes Statistics Act (28 U.S.C. 534). For the 2007 calendar year, there were no crimes committed on the campus.  For the 2008 calendar year, there were no crimes committed on the campus. For the 2009 calendar year, there was one liquor law violation and one theft on campus. There have been no arrests in the past 3 years for violations of drug abuse or weapons possession. Federal law also requires all schools to keep a log of fires on campus property. For the last 3 years, there have been no fires on the Manhattan Christian College Campus.

Because of the small college atmosphere (two square blocks in area) and the Christian nature of the college, crime has not been a problem on the MCC campus. Recognizing that it is possible, anyone witnessing a crime or becoming the victim of one should report the incident to the Student Services Office located at 1413 Laramie Street. After hours notice should be handled through residence hall supervisors, if the Student Services Office is unavailable. MCC offices and classroom buildings are open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on school days. Residence halls are open from 7 a.m. until midnight and until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Employees and students are given an MCC Handbook upon entering the institution which details campus policies on drug and alcohol possession, use and distribution, which is forbidden. Information relative to the U. S. Dept. of Education Drug-Free Schools and Campuses Act is detailed in the MCC Student Handbook as well as the agencies to contact for rehabilitation. The MCC Student Handbook may be accessed from the MCC web site www.mccks.edu.

Basically the Biblical standards of conduct and the “Golden Rule” of “treating others as we would be treated” provides a philosophy of personal responsibility which transcends any program of crime prevention and accounts for the safety and lack of crime on the Manhattan Christian College campus.

Campus security policy and procedures: Crimes are not tolerated on the MCC campus and within the MCC community.  They will be reported to local authorities promptly and full cooperation will be given to local law enforcement agencies. Campus safety and security guidelines are published in the MCC handbooks. Employees share the responsibility for safety and security of themselves, fellow employees, students, guests, college and personal property. It is important that all emp0loyees of the college cooperate with safety and security guidelines. All employees are expected to suggest and comply with safety practices relating to their work. Incidents involving employees should be reported to the Business Office. Minimizing the risks to personnel and students is accomplished through reporting property crimes and suspicious situations to the director of the physical plant and providing witness testimony, as necessary, in the event of an investigation. The administration and staff of Manhattan Christian College are pleased to offer a relatively crime-free environment for its students and employees.
