#9 Coach Guinty’s Earns First Career Win
With all new beginnings come new challenges and Coach Guinty’s first season at the helm of the Crusader baseball team was no exception. After significant roster turnover from a team that finished the 2012 season 3rd in the NCCAA the Crusaders were left with an inexperienced roster and coaching staff. As the games came and went the Crusaders found themselves looking for their first win of the season and it came in the most unlikely of places.
MCC went into the game against the McPherson College Bulldogs (NAIA) with a winless record and shaken confidence. During that afternoon in McPherson, KS that shaky confidence turned into rock solid determination as the Crusaders found themselves in a dogfight with MC. Through 2 ½ innings the game was scoreless before the Bulldogs scored one run in the bottom of the third. With offense being at a premium that could have been it, but a resilient MCC team led by James Floyd (Sherman, TX), Adam Schmitz (Westmoreland, KS), and Aaron Lassley (Wichita, KS) was able to answer with three runs in the top half of the fourth. From there the Bulldogs were only able answer with one more run and the Crusaders hung on to win the game 3-2. Nick Noren (Overland Park, KS) pitched well for MCC going the distance while allowing only 2 earned runs.
The victory over McPherson College was the first on the season for the Crusaders, but more importantly the first in the career of Head Coach Kasey Guinty. With roster turnover expected for 2014 Coach Guinty has been able to put together a solid recruiting class that will add roster depth at key positions. Look for the 2014 Crusaders effort to reflect that of their coach and make strides forward toward the goal of a regional championship.
