Denise Wren, ‘83
After graduating from the dual-degree program at MCC and KSU in 1983, Denise spent 30 years with the Wichita Public Schools, Wichita, KS. She served 9 years as a Physical Education and Science teacher at Wilbur Middle and Northwest High School. In 1992, she was promoted to Assistant Principal at Pleasant Valley Middle School and served in that capacity for three years. From there, and for the next five years (1995-2000), she served as Assistant Principal at Wichita Heights High School. In 2000, she was promoted and returned to Pleasant Valley Middle School as Principal until 2003. In 2003, she took on the role of Principal at Wichita High School North. While at North, she helped make drastic changes in a high poverty urban school which had an 11% drop-out rate and a graduation rate of 49%. North currently has one of the top AVID programs in the country and has been a National Demonstration School since 2006. At present, North’s graduation rate is 86.4%.
In July of 2006, Denise accepted the responsibility of leading all of Wichita’s high schools as she was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of High Schools. In 2011, Denise was promoted to the position of Chief Operations Officer where she supervised all operations for the Wichita Public Schools. In July of 2012, she left the Wichita Public Schools to accept a position with AVID Center. AVID is a non-profit organization that partners with school districts across the United States, and internationally, to provide equitable college readiness opportunities for all students.
Denise is a member of Pathway Church in Wichita, KS, where she has served since 1970. As an extension of her Christian service, Denise is on the Board of Directors for GraceMed. The mission of GraceMed is to show and share the love of Jesus Christ by providing compassionate, accessible, high-quality health care for residents of south central Kansas.
