Scholarships Make a Difference
Scholarships are a wonderful way to memorialize and honor loved ones and special friends while supporting students who otherwise could not attend Christian college. More than 65 individuals and churches have established endowed scholarships at MCC to financially assist in educating, equipping, and enriching Christian leaders. Endowed scholarships of $5,000 or more may be named in honor of an individual, family, or church. Distinguished scholarships may be established with endowments of $25,000 and awards distributed through a specific application process.
For some individuals, establishing an endowed fund for something other than scholarship awards better meets their personal goals. An endowment fund may be established to benefit Manhattan Christian College and provide additional opportunities for the students. For example:
Manhattan Christian College deeply appreciates your interest in the college. Your long-term investment in MCC will be a perennial blessing to the hundreds of young people who are educated, equipped, and enriched to be Christian leaders for the future generations. You will have the joy of knowing your endowed gift will reach around the world touching countless lives through the young men and women being trained at MCC.

Proposed Scholarship Standards
A "scholarship," by definition, is a specific gift of money, or other aid, to help a student pursue educational studies. It is the hope and mission of Manhattan Christian College (MCC), that through the MCC Endowment Fund, assistance can be offered to any qualified student to further their education and become a Christian leader in their chosen field.
The MCC Endowment Fund is provided through assorted and various established scholarship funds. Also known as the MCC General Scholarship Fund, the fund is sustained through the corpus amounts of the different scholarship funds. A "corpus" is the principal of an investment, as opposed to the interest or income of an investment. MCC requires a minimum corpus investment of $5,000 to endow a fund.
Generally, a scholarship fund is established in memorial to a deceased family member. Scholarship funds may also be established to accomplish the specific purposes of one still living. Whatever the reason for funding, a scholarship provides financial aid to students attending Manhattan Christian College. Often, scholarship funds are constructed to support specific areas of interest or preferences of the one for whom the scholarship is named or as those establishing the scholarship deem appropriate.
According to MCC procedures, endowment funds are pooled and distributed to meet as many student financial needs as possible. Students apply for financial aid through the college. The college then makes financial awards to students based on financial need. The awards are matched to students who meet the established criteria of the respective scholarships. These students are notified which scholarship(s) contributed to providing their financial aid award. The students are then encouraged to contact the scholarship provider and express their appreciation. Scholarship providers are also notified through a letter from the college approximately eight weeks into the semester of the student recipient of the respective scholarship.
The MCC Endowment Fund is administered by the college through the Scholarship Committee and consists of a number of individual scholarship funds. The college Scholarship Committee is composed of MCC faculty, staff and administration. The Scholarship Committee reviews student financial aid applications, the criteria of established scholarships when applicable, the students who meet the criteria and select the recipient of the restricted scholarships. When needed, this committee will consult with and ask for recommendations from student faculty advisors to determine the most deserving student who qualifies for a specific scholarship.
Occasionally, individuals or families associated with a scholarship may wish a more active part in the selection of a recipient. The labor intensive aspect of the scholarship selection process and the time constraints usually faced by the Scholarship Committee predicates that guidelines for such participation be established. Therefore, any endowed scholarship with a corpus of more than $25,000 may be awarded as a "Distinguished Scholarship" award. Such an investment would return an amount consistent with the most elite and prestigious scholarship awards given by the college. Applications for Distinguished Scholarships may be made separate from any MCC financial aid awards. A process for application evaluation and recipient selection would be determined at the inception of such a scholarship fund with the party funding the scholarship. Recipients of a Distinguished Scholarship would be required to wave the MCC financial aid for which they may have qualified otherwise.
All MCC students receiving financial aid through scholarships will be required to contact benefactors and express their appreciation for the provision. Likewise, scholarship providers will be notified of recipients. Distinguished Scholarships will be featured in the Manhattan Christian College newsletter and recipient notifications sent to the respective home churches and local newspapers, as identified in the Distinguished Scholarship agreement.
MCC and its students are indebted to the generous hearts of many ministry partners who have established endowed scholarships. Last year, the MCC Endowment Fund provided more than $45,000 to assist students in meeting their educational goals. As endowment grows, the number of students we can assist financially and the level of that assistance will also grow. It is the college's desire to have an endowment large enough to meet student financial needs without increasing tuition each year. As administrator of all endowment income, MCC is committed to faithfully administer endowment funds following all recommended standards for financial accountability.
