INTERNATIONAL STUDENT
TAX INFORMATION

MCC staff are not experts on international tax matters. MCC staff do not assist in the completion of individual income tax forms, and are unable to explain tax liability issues to international students, scholars or staff. Therefore, we recommend that you consult the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or a qualified tax consultant regarding your possible U.S. tax obligations or attend a tax workshop. The following information is provided to help international students obtain the information they need so that they can make informed choices about their tax obligations.

The IRS publishes a number of helpful information/instruction booklets, which are available through the IRS Tax Payer Assistance Service (toll free 1.800.829.3676). Forms are available at most local public libraries or on-line at www.irs.ustreas.gov.

When filing taxes, be sure to follow the instructions on the tax return form, and always make copies to keep for your records.

All F-1 students on MCC I-20's MUST file form 8843. Those F-1 students on MCC I-20's who have been employed in the past year are required to file the appropriate state and federal tax forms.

I am an F-1 visa student. I had no income in the past year. Do I still need to file taxes?
Yes,
you must file a form 8843, even if you had no income in the previous year.

If I have been present in the U.S. for only a few days of the past year, do I have to file?
If you were present in the USA in F-1 visa status during any period of time in the past year, even if you entered the USA in late December, you must file. If you had no income during this time, you must only file a form 8843.

How do I find the name, address, and phone number of the institution and the director of the institution that I attended?
If you are an F-1 student on an I-20 from MCC, the name, address, and phone number is as below:

Jeff Davis, PDSO
Manhattan Christian College
1415 Anderson Ave
Manhattan, KS 66502
785-539-3571

What is the deadline for filing?
The deadline for filing is April 15.

Where do I mail the forms?
The tax forms should be mailed to the address listed in the instructions of the form. If you are filing only the form 8843, send the completed form 8843 to the address listed in the form instructions. If you are filing the 8843 with other federal tax forms, attach the 8843 to your federal tax return and send it to the address listed in the federal tax return instructions.

I received a form 1098-T in the mail. What should I do with this form?
Form 1098-T is used for those who are eligible for taking a deduction for tuition and related expenses. The 1098-T sent from the college verifies the amount of educational expenses that were paid to MCC by you. F-1 visa students cannot take this deduction, so this form is only for your information. Other immigrants should contact a tax professional to see if they qualify.
